The Solidisk 1770 Disc Interface is a double density disc controller using a Western Digital WD1770 disc controller. It is mounted on a small daughter board and plugs into the 8271 socket on the BBC motherboard. It comes with the Solidisk DFS 2.0 ROM plugs into one of the sideways ROM sockets.
 
A Solidisk advertisement (Acorn User Dec 1985) says:
"The Solidisk 1770 DFS includes a built-in disc formatted and verifier, automatic 40/80 track switching, programmable disc speed and is upgradable to the Solidisc ADFS. it also has some advantages over the the Acorn 1770 system:
