The Viglen Sideways ROM Catridge System fits into the "ashtray" on the left hand side of the BBC Micro's keyboard and then plugs into one of the sideways ROM sockets on the motherboard. Each cartridge contains 1 ROM/EPROM. You can change ROM/EPROMs without having to open the BBC case and without risk to the ROM/EPROMs legs.
When my BBC Micro ran out of ROM sockets on its APTL Sidewise ROM board, I installed a Sideways ROM Cartridge system in my BBC Micro . Then sorted out the most used ROM and put them on the APTL Sidewise board and the rest went into Viglen Cartridges. The Cartridge holders are very useful as the link together so you get a strip of cartridges which makes it harder to lose them.
In October 1984 Acorn User published a review titled "ROMs on the side".
