News from Acorn Computers - Release Date: 20th September 1994 Children Stage Fleet Street-Style Takeover Bid at Live '94 ---------------------------------------------------------- - Pupils to produce show newspaper through Acorn/TES competition - Children will be the eyes and ears of Live '94, the consumer electronics show being held at Earls Court from September 20-25th. Pupils from four schools will be producing a real newspaper called The Live Daily Show News for all visitors to the show, thanks to a competition run by the Times Educational Supplement and sponsored by Acorn Computers. Philip Schofield, of BBC 1's 'Going Live' and 'Joseph' fame, will be interviewed live by the budding reporters over a revolutionary videophone developed by BT. The in-house television station, Channel 94, will also be interviewing the teams and tracking their progress. "These children are going to have a fantastic time producing the newspaper," said Dick Wallin, Secondary Sector Marketing Manager at Acorn Computers. "Seeking out and writing the stories on their Pocket Book palmtop computers and laying out the newspaper on their desktop Risc PCs will involve them tearing around the show to meet the strict deadlines. These children are the Citizen Kanes and Rupert Murdochs of the future!" The original competition, which ran on March 22nd 1994, set over 250 schools the challenge of producing their own newspaper under tight deadlines from the news of that day. The winning schools, from Canterbury, Whitby, Londonderry and Minster, were not only awarded valuable computer equipment from Acorn, but also won the opportunity to produce the show newspaper at this year's Live '94.
