Acorn Launches Voyage of Discovery Acorn Computers is launching a newly integrated computer curriculum pack aimed at the Primary education sector. The Discovery Pack has been designed in conjunction with educationalists to target the specific requirements of primary schools in meeting the demands of IT within today's curriculum. It is built around the popular A3020 computer now found throughout the educational sector, and pre-installed on its hard disc is a range of software especially selected for its suitability for primary education. The software includes Acorn's recently launched Advance integrated software suite comprising word processor, spreadsheet and data base as well as a graphing facility; the award winning Crystal Rainforest adventure simulation and Logo application from Sherston; Longman Logotron's Magpie multimedia authoring system, incorporating Acorn's Replay full motion video utility; a pointer application to resize the mouse-driven pointer and two primary fonts. There is also a pre-installed Magpie application which introduces the user to the Discovery system and Acorn's education support network as well as playing two Replay video clips. Also in the Discovery pack are teacher support materials, especially commissioned from Hampshire's Primary IT Advisory Team, which introduce the software and offer practical advice to teachers on integrating IT into standard classroom activities. The easy-to-read guide includes project frameworks and examples of children's work produced using the software in their projects. It also contains two appendices covering the National Curriculum for England, introduced by NCET, and the Scottish 5-14 Curriculum, produced by SCET, mapping the software in the pack to curriculum targets. There is also information on the Acorn in Education Centres initiative which offers professional support to teachers in the classroom. The Discovery pack also features a special heat sensitive mouse mat which reveals hidden pictures, an audio training tape introducing the user to the desktop environment and the use of the operating system; an academic wall planner covering the two education years 1993/4 and 1994/5; an education directory lists over 2,000 applications of particular interest to educationalists; and vouchers giving disounts on educational software and peripherals from eight companies specialising in Primary education. Discovery costs #1149 (ex VAT) and will be available from Acorn's network of Education dealers from the beginning of May 1993.
