Acorn to Offer Super Choice of IT Courses Embargo Release Date 20th January 1993 Acorn Computers has joined forces with Superchoice to offer a series of fully resourced residential Information Technology courses tailor-made for schools and colleges. Superchoice - a subsidiary of the Pontin's Leisure Group - will be offering the first Active-IT term time courses at their Osmington Bay Centre overlooking Weymouth Bay in Dorset. The Centre boasts four fully equipped Information Technology rooms each containing twelve Acorn Archimedes workstations. Other locations around the UK will be added in the future. The Active-IT courses are designed to take IT out of the classroom and to explore cross curricular themes through adventure and discovery. Each course is driven by the needs of the curriculum and is individually tailored for each group of pupils. As well as providing instruction, the courses will also offer hands-on experience of a variety of outdoor pursuits such as orienteering and field studies. Acorn's Education Marketing Manager Dick Wallin explained that Acorn had become involved with Superchoice to launch Active-IT because it appeared such a worthwhile project. "There is clearly a need to extend IT beyond the classroom and into the world at large." he explained. "Active-IT will satisfy a number of curriculum objectives and add an important element of cross curricular activity at the same time. " Lloyd Smith, Managing Director of Superchoice, described the courses as a learning experience driven by fun and adventure. "Active-IT links information technology with the real world." he said. "Rather than learning computer practice for its own sake, pupils will be able to relate their IT useage to real life situations. "School groups are accomodated to a high standard in our single-roomed chalets, all of which have their own private facilities." he added.
