PEP Associates are please to announce that, as from the 1st November, it will be possible to access CD-ROM across AUN networks by utilising their new product, CD-Net. The product, as the names suggests, has been designed specifically to fufill the task of serving CD-ROMs over the network. It consists of a server application and a filer application. The server application allows the network manager to decide which CD-ROMs are available over the network. It utilises state-of-the-art cacheing technology to maximise network usage while overcoming the relatively slow speed of CD-ROM drives. By using appropriate network cabling, it is even possible to run Replay accessed over Econet, Ethernet and NEXUS networks. The filer application allows users to access CD-ROMs from the desktop as if the CD-ROM drive was attached to their computer. For some titles, CD-Net enhanced retrieval software makes accessing the data even simpler. "It is our hope that this exciting product will be the catalyst which brings together CD-ROM and networking technology" said Patrick O'Reilly, PEP's educational and IT product development manager. To introduce the product, a trial pack is available for #39.95 which contains the server software and the filer application. It will provide unlimited access to the Acorn Replay Videoclip Collection One and Acorn Educational Directory Issue 4 CD-ROMs. It will also provide 30 day access to several commercial applications including the Hutchinson Encyclopedia (1993 text version) and the Hutchinson Multimedia Encyclopedia. If you have any enquiries regarding this product, please contact Ellis Hall at PEP Associates, 34 Tiverton Way, Cambridge, CB1 3TU, or by phone or fax on 0223 212251. _______________________________________________________________________________ > Date : Thu Oct 14 09:27:17 1993 > From : aglover@acorn.co.uk > To : All > Subject: PEP Associates Press Release: Announcing CD-NET > ANNOUNCING CD-NET CD-ROM + Network = ? >From 1st November 1993, it will be possible to access CD-ROM across AUN networks. Until now, the utilisation of CD-ROM in schools has been severely limited by the technical problems involved in reading CD-ROMs across Acorn networks. The CD-Net filing system from PEP Associates liberates CD-ROM from its single-user status, and gives Acorn network users the ability to share an ever increasing pool of CD-ROM based resources. As its name suggests, CD-Net has been specifically designed to serve CD-ROMs across networks. Because it is AUN compliant, it will work over any network that uses Econet, Ethernet or NEXUS as the transport layer. CD-Net consists of two applications: A server that allows the network manager to decide which CD-ROMs can be accessed by network users. This utilises state-of-the-art cacheing technology to maximise data throughput while overcoming the relatively slow speed of CD-ROM drives. It will even run Replay machine, provided that appropriate network cabling is present. A filer that allows users to access CD-ROMs from the desktop as if the CD-ROM drive were attached to their computer. In addition, some CD-ROM titles will make CD-ROM-based data even easier to access by utlilising CD-Net-enhanced retrieval software. "CD-Net represents an important technical breakthrough", commented Patrick O'Reilly, PEP's Educational and IT Product Development Manager, "It is our hope that this exciting product will be the catalyst which brings together CD-ROM and networking technology". To introduce CD-Net, a trial pack is available for #39.95 which contains the server software and the filer application. It will serve: Acorn's Replay demo disc Acorn's Educational Directory on CD-ROM, issue 4. plus 30 day trials of the Hutchinson Multimedia Encyclopedia and the Hutchinson 1993 Encyclopedia. _______________________________________________________________________________ > Date : Thu Oct 14 10:28:52 1993 > From : aglover@acorn.co.uk > To : All > Subject: PEP Associates Press Release: Contact Details > A postscript to the previous posting, any enquiries regarding CD-Net should be addressed to Ellis Hall on 0223 212251, or by fax to the same number, or by letter to PEP Associates, 34 Tiverton Way, Cambridge, CB1 3TU. _______________________________________________________________________________
